Nomadic Expeditions has been a leading provider of cultural, educational, and adventure travel in Mongolia since 1992. We offer a diverse selection of trips throughout Mongolia, as well as Tibet, Bhutan, Siberia, and China, with a focus on genuine cultural interaction, active adventure travel to off-the-beaten-path destinations, and discovery of the rich history and biodiversity of this remarkable part of the world.
With offices in the United States and Ulaanbaatar, Nomadic Expeditions has provided travel services for thousands of travelers during nearly two decades as the most respected name in travel to Mongolia. Our clients include research and conservations organizations, museums, and universities, as well as adventurous travelers from across the globe. A full-service travel and tour operator, Nomadic Expeditions employs close to 30 full-time staff throughout the year, including guides, office staff, and drivers.
In addition to offering extensive travel services to destinations throughout the region, Nomadic Expeditions operates the Three Camel Lodge, Mongolia’s premier luxury ger camp. Guests at the Lodge experience the Gobi’s extraordinary landscape while enjoying the comfort of deluxe ger accommodations, as well as a wide range of activities and excursions. Built in 2003 using environmentally and culturally sustainable development guidelines, the Three Camel Lodge has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, including being chosen as one of the world’s top 50 eco-lodges by National Geographic Adventure magazine.
The Three Camel Lodge is also a center for conservation in the Gobi, dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and education, and plays an integral part in Nomadic Expeditions’ continuing efforts to promote responsible and eco-friendly tourism in Mongolia. By supporting local conservation groups, and through the organization of events aimed at preserving cultural traditions and protecting endangered wildlife, Nomadic Expeditions has placed itself at the forefront of the movement to protect Mongolia’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
The Golden Eagle Festival, founded by Nomadic Expeditions’ president Jalsa Urubshurow, and the Thousand Camel Festival are among the most successful of these endeavors. Held in the Altai Mountains of Western Mongolia, the aim of the Golden Eagle Festival is to preserve the traditional heritage of the Kazakhs, Mongolia’s largest ethnic minority, who for centuries have hunted with trained eagles. The Thousand Camel Festival, a celebration of the endangered Bactrian camel, takes place each winter in the Gobi Desert and features competitions and cultural events.
Nomadic Expeditions has twice been voted the year’s best tour operator by the Mongolian Tourism Association, and was honored for developing and supporting nonprofit projects by the ETC Responsible Tourism Showcase in 2006.
ABOUT OUR FOUNDER
Jalsa Urubshurow is a Mongolian-American with a deep love and respect for his ancestral homeland and a firm commitment to culturally and ecologically responsible tourism. As the CEO and president of Nomadic Expeditions and the Three Camel Lodge, Mr. Urubshurow is dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism in Mongolia while sharing the wonders of its cultural and natural treasures with travelers from around the world.
Before founding Nomadic Expeditions in 1992, Mr. Urubshurow was personally recruited by the first prime minister of the newly democratic Mongolia to advise the government on opening the country to Western travelers.
