Temples and Trekking in Tibet This active expedition to Tibet explores the monasteries, historical sites, and scenic landscapes of one of the world’s most intriguing and spiritual destinations. Discover ruined hilltop palaces, visit ancient monasteries and cave retreats, and trek to Lhamo La Tso, Tibet’s most important oracle lake.
After visiting Beijing and the grandeur of the Forbidden City, fly to Lhasa, home to such architectural and cultural treasures as Potala Palace and the 17th-century Jokhang Monastery. Tour the city’s famed temples, experience the daily life of its people, and attend the Saga Dawa Festival, which celebrates Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment and often involves tsam dancing and the displaying of giant thangka paintings.
The journey to Chokorgye Monastery is the expedition’s centerpiece. Our trek follows a path through the Amando Valley, a landscape of grasslands and wildflowers surrounded by snow-capped mountains, to reach the dramatic ruins of this vast temple complex, built in 1509 by the Second Dalai Lama.
