Trip Type: Horseback Riding

Northern Mongolia on Horseback, Horse Trek to Hagiin Har Lake, Golden Eagles of the Kazakhs

Given Mongolia’s horse-based culture and the vast open land of its steppes, the whole of Mongolia is a dreamland for horse lovers. Known for their strength and stamina, Mongolian horses are an essential part of the nomadic lifestyle, used for riding, milking and transporting, and even for sport during the national holiday celebrations of summer. Our horseback riding trips are designed for active travelers seeking the thrill and serenity of riding across some of the most pristine wild areas on the planet. Participants should have at least basic horse riding skills and be in good health. All equipment is provided, including saddles, camping gear and helmets.

Experience the thrill of riding alongside Kazakh nomads as they hunt with trained Golden Eagles. Specially timed for the winter hunting season, this journey leads to Mongolia’s far western province, Bayan-Ulgii, where Kazakh hunters track small rabbits and foxes in the snow with the help of their magnificent eagles.

Overview

Travel on horseback north from Ulaanbaatar, through river valleys and mountain passes, stopping along the way to explore the atmospheric Gunjin Temple ruins. A horse trek designed for experienced riders, the dramatic journey to Hagiin Har passes through coniferous forests, marshlands, and grassy hills to reach this extraordinary crystal-clear lake.

Surrounded by the wild crags of the Han Hentii Mountains, and free of any human settlement, Hagiin Har Lake is an ideal place for fishing, horseback riding, hiking, kayaking, and relaxing. The horses used on the trek are generally smaller and leaner than those riders may be used to, but this is characteristic of this sturdy Mongolian breed. Approximately four to six hours will be spent in the saddle each day, and traditional Russian cavalry-style saddles will be provided for each participant. In addition to the Nomadic Expeditions guide, the crew will include a camp cook and local horse wranglers.

The horses used on the trek are generally smaller and leaner than those riders may be used to, a characteristic of this sturdy Mongolian breed. Approximately six to eight hours (30 - 40 km) will be spent in the saddle each day, with traditional Russian cavalry-style saddles provided for each participant. In addition to the bilingual Nomadic Expeditions guide, the crew will include a camp cook and local horse wranglers.
