The magic of Mongolia captured my heart long before I ever visited the country.
When I was a young boy, my father captivated my imagination by reciting and singing traditional fables, songs and legends about the history and traditions of Mongolia. These were the tales of his Kalmyk-Mongolian childhood, shared with him by his father and passed down for generations long before he came to the United States. My fathers vividly colorful stories of the vast open steppe and feats of horsemanship and adventure instilled in me a dream to visit my ancestral homeland.
I have since traveled to Mongolia many times, but each trip is as enriching as if it were the firstancient lakes and volcanoes, the seemingly endless Gobi, timeless traditions, the eternal blue sky, and open hearts of the nomads...
In the same tradition, ever since my son was a small boy, I recited to him the vivid stories and legends that his grandfather and great-grandfather had passed down through the years. We spent many afternoons imagining our first expedition together to the Gobi Desert to look for dinosaur fossils at the legendary Flaming Cliffs. And so, this past summer, I fulfilled another dream and brought my own son to Mongolia to experience the seemingly endless Gobi, to gallop with me on horseback across the vast steppe, to paddle unexplored rivers, and to journey back in time to search for and discover ancient dinosaur fossils.
Though I have visited Mongolia many times, nothing rivals sharing the experience with the ones closest to younot a journey to another land, but a journey back in time.
We hope you will join us to explore Mongolia, or to land beyond, and perhaps realize a dream of your own.
