After exploring the museums and monasteries of Ulaanbaatar, begin this adventure tour in Mongolia with a flight north to Lake Hovsgol, where there will be opportunities to visit local nomads, ride horses, fish, or simply relax among some of the world’s most pristine mountains and meadows. Continuing south, travel through mountains, grassland, and steppe, stopping along the way at ancient “deer stones,” the temples of Erdene Zuu monastery, and the ruins of Ongiin Hiid. This epic expedition concludes in the magical landscapes of the Gobi, where the Flaming Cliffs tower above the vast desert and Bearded Vultures circle the skies above the extraordinary Yol Valley.

Outline Itinerary

Day 1-2 | Ulaanbaatar

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar. Explore the capital’s Gandan Monastery, the National History Museum, and the Zaisan Memorial.

Day 3-5 | Lake Hovsgol & Off-Road Tour of Mongolia

Fly to Murun and drive to Lake Hovsgol. Spend the following days exploring the mountains and meadows that surround the lake’s crystal clear waters.

Day 6-7 | Uushgiin Deer Stones & Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake

Travel to Zuun Nuur and the Uushgiin Deer Stones, mysterious monuments dating back thousands of years. Drive to Arkhangai Province, where the Horgo Volcano and Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake are located amidst some of Mongolia’s most beautiful scenery.

Day 8-9 | Taikhar Rock, Tsetserleg, & Karakorum

Tour Mongolia and visit Taikhar Rock, Tsetserleg, and the Zayayn Gegeenii Temple, before arriving at Karakorum, site of Erdene Zuu Monastery and the vanished capital of the Mongol Empire.

Day 10-13 | Ongiin Hiid, Yol Valley, Khavtsgait, & Flaming Cliffs

Drive to Ongiin Hiid Monastery and across vast steppe into the Gobi Desert. Arrive at the Three Camel Lodge. Hike in the Yol Valley, discover the ancient rock paintings at Khavtsgait and visit the dramatic Flaming Cliffs.

Day 14 | Ulaanbaatar

Closing this tour of Mongolia, return to Ulaanbaatar in the afternoon and enjoy a traditional dance and throat singing performance.
