Stunning snowcapped mountains, including the third highest in the world. Lush valleys, enchanting villages and ancient Tibetan monasteries. You’ll experience all of this, and more, on this Quick Escape journey to Sikkim and Darjeeling.

You’ll first visit Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, and the capital of the independent kingdom of Sikkim until its merger with India in 1975. Led by the Chogyal dynasty, of Tibetan Buddhist origin, this area remains heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. Established by the 16th Karmapa, Rumtek Monastery, just to the south of Gangtok, is one of the highlights of visiting this region.

Darjeeling, once a summer capital under the British Raj, is world-renowned for its teas, and its tea plantations are a vital source of livelihood for the people of the Himalayan foothills. The region was also jumping-off point for many Himalayan mountaineering expeditions, and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, once headed by the Everest-conquering Tenzing Norgay, is located in Darjeeling. The scenic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, with its lovely little toy train, travels between Siliguri and Darjeeling, and has been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kalimpong, another hill station of the Raj, is a strategically located market town at the crossroads between Sikkim, Bhutan, Tibet and the Bengali plains. Kalimpong offers some great shopping, and like Darjeeling is a delightful blend of Raj architecture and Tibetan monasteries, with an added pinch of Bengali and Nepalese flavor.

Come see why the great climber-writer Fosco Maraini deemed this part of the world a “fairy tale.”
