Festivals of Tibet

Tibet’s festivals reflect deep spirituality, artistic heritage, and strong community ties. Each event offers a meaningful window into Tibetan culture and the values that shape daily life across the region. Three of the most significant celebrations are Losar, Shoton, and Saga Dawa. Together they highlight the unique blend of faith, art, and tradition that travelers encounter in Tibet.

LOSAR

February or March, based on the lunar calendar

Losar marks Tibetan New Year and is the most important festival of the year. Celebrated on the first day of the lunar calendar, it brings families together for offerings, blessings, and time spent welcoming a hopeful start to the year. Homes are cleaned and prepared, incense is burned, and traditional foods are shared as a way to bless the coming harvest and ensure good fortune. While other Asian cultures celebrate lunar New Year, Losar remains distinctly Tibetan in its rituals and symbolism.

Shoton Festival

Late June or early July

Shoton is one of Tibet’s most colorful and artistic festivals. Known as the Yogurt Festival in its earliest form, it has evolved into a celebration focused on Tibetan opera and cultural performance. Audiences gather outdoors to watch elaborate operas featuring vibrant costumes, music, and storytelling. Art displays and community events fill parks and open spaces, creating a lively atmosphere that highlights the creativity and cultural pride of the Tibetan people.

Saga Dawa

Full moon of the fourth lunar month, typically May or June

Saga Dawa is one of the most sacred days in the Tibetan Buddhist world. It commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Sakyamuni Buddha. The entire month is considered holy, but the full moon day carries the greatest significance. Pilgrims from around the world travel to sacred sites, with Mt. Kailash being especially important. Completing the kora around Mt. Kailash during Saga Dawa is believed to bring profound merit, and visitors will encounter hundreds of devoted pilgrims making the journey.
